INS Vikramaditya (R33), (Vikramaditya means “Brave as Sun”) has joined with the Indian Navy force in 2013. Now what should we know about it? That’s what we r going to discuss. Vikramaditya started its journey as a developed Kiev-class aircraft carrier. Kiev-class aircraft carrier means (which is also known as project 1143 or Krechyet) the first class of fixed-wing aircraft carriers which was built in Soviet Union. A fixed-wing aircraft is able to flight using wings that generate lift caused by the vehicle's forward airspeed and the shape of the wings.

Let’s get to the point. Vikramaditya basically built as Baku. Baku is also known as Soviet aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov which is also a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier of the Russian Navy. She began her service in 1987 but disband in 1996 because she was so expensive that Russian navy couldn’t operate on after-Cold war budget, this is what attracted the attention of India.

After years of negotiations on 20th January 2004 India and Russia signed a deal for the shipment of the Ship. India paid US$800 million for the upgrade of the ship and additional US$1 billion for the aircraft and also for the Weapons Systems. The deal also included the advanced aircraft and anti-submarine helicopters and advanced E-2D Hawkeye system.

The declared transmission date for INS Vikramaditya was August 2008. But the retirement of INS Viraat had been pushed out to 2010-2012. Because of this delay Russian had to pay for the overruns of INS Vikramaditya. To resolve this issue India paid US$1.2 billion for the project, which is more than double of the original cost. However, the delivery was scheduled in 2013. This was the history behind INS Vikramaditya.

So what are the features of this ship? Was it worth to spend billions dollars on it? The answer is “Yes”. Vikramaditya will be operated in STOBAR configuration. STOBAR (Short take-off but Arrested Recovery) is a process which is used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of a Warship. The Warship has the potential to accommodate Phased array radar system. Which was first esteemed on the United States Navy’s USS Long Beach.

After using 2,500 tons of steel 234 new hull sections were created in the ship. It has 4 propellers and it is powered by 8 Boilers. Vikramaditya’s speed is over 30 kts and Length is 284 M, and its Aircraft Components are MiG 29K, Kamov 31, Kamov 28, Seaking, ALH, and Cheetah.
