Cabinet approves a bill on Protecting Women from Sexual Harassment

The Union Cabinet has approved a Bill, which is aimed at protecting women, including lakhs employed as domestic workers, from sexual harassment at the work place. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Bill) was presented to the cabinet by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, after a Group of Ministers had earlier examined it.

The Bill aims to protect not only women employees but those who enter the offices as clients, customers, apprentices, students or research scholars. Considering the recent happenings it is pretty important. Now women don’t feel protected out of the house, so this bill may give them freedom of work, they may feel much more protected now while working.

The Bill makes it mandatory that all offices, hospitals, institutions and other workplaces should have an internal redressal mechanism for complaints related to sexual harassment. This is one of the necessary moves for sure.
