Smartphone users of the ten major cities of India including the four
featuring metros very soon will be able to access Doordarshan along with
nineteen other channels that are provided by Prasar Bharati itself on their own
devices for absolutely free of cost.
Users will be able to watch these channels on their smartphones,
laptops, tablets, or I-Pads. Some key official sources recently revealed that
the supreme national broadcaster has ultimately come up with an aggressive
plan, as the body is all set to expand its own mobile TV services across the
countries in the coming days.
Prasar Bharati is targeting to cover at least 40 important cities of
India in its plan of action, and according to some key sources the services are
very much likely to start its journey in 10 major cities before the end of this
current year i.e. 2013.
In the year of 2007 Prasar Bharati experimented with its Mobile TV
services for the very first time. At that time it even had set up a dedicated
pilot project in the capital of the country Delhi. But there was a limitation,
as at that period of time the signals were only permitted to be transmitted in
a range of 10 KMs only.
While explaining some project the official source said, “The technology that will be used now would be Digital Video
Broadcast - terrestrial (DVB-T2) which can take high quality signals in a
radius of 90 kilometres."
Prasar Bharati officials are very much keen to target the emerging
smartphone market of the country by launching its advanced mobile TV services.
The broadcasting body is hoping that this launch will be able to provide them a
strong hold over this segment of the market. In this blog we have discussed
before that India’s smartphone users rate is increasing in a very steady rate,
and for that only leading companies like Samsung, Nokia have started to give priority to Indian market a lot
more than before.
The Prasar Bharati official also mentioned that currently watching a
video clip, or certain TV programmes on mobile is not very convenient for the
end users as the buffering takes up a long time. According to him the body is
acknowledging this problem while making the services and it will come up with
far better options.
The source further added, "One
of the biggest advantages this service would offer is that there would be no
buffering and the clarity would be high definition. It would be like watching
normal high definition TV on the move."
As per the relevant sources the dedicated Engineering body of the
Doordarshan is currently examining and developing all the needed technical
aspects of the mobile TV project. Doordarshan has already formed another
committee which is currently discussing about what type of subject
materials/contents the broadcasting body would finally put out on the ultimate
Mobile TV plan.
A senior official of the body quoted, "While
the content produced by Doordarshan would be the mainstay, we are also open to
the option of private television channels using this platform and showcasing
their content."
In May 2007 Prasar Bharati launched its first Mobile TV pilot project in
Delhi with a set of 8 TV channels. AT that time the transmitter, which was an
important integral part of the project, was installed in Akashwani Bhawan,
which is situated at Parliament Street. The signals were not that much strong,
and it could only be received on mobile phones that were DVB-H enabled within a
range of about maximum 10 kilometres from the prime location of the
transmitter. Due to this limitations the project was not find any successes
that it was hoping for.
We hope this time it will be successful as the features are quite
advanced, and it is looking very much promising too. The next generation mainly
prefers to watch their favorite TV programmes on their own smartphones with the
help of advanced technologies some of the leading bodies offer. Now Prasar
Bharati is targeting the right people with right attitude, so the success is
very much likely.
