The global smartphone maker BlackBerry informs that it is in the process of
shutting down its popular streaming music service named as BBM Music. This music service is in active for almost two years since its launch, and it will stop working from 2nd
June, 2013.
Eventually this week the BlackBerry sends an
email to all the subscribers of BlackBerry
Messenger Music to inform them that the
cloud-based music service will not work from 2nd June. Now days RIM, which renamed itself to BlackBerry earlier, is in the process
to boost its overall profit, and regain the lost glory in the market.
On Thursday the Canadian handset maker clarified this
decision by saying that this is a follow up of “strategic business review” of
its offerings. BlackBerry is wiping out this music service may be because of
the not so much earning (read profits) from it.
BBM Music was launched in August 2011 at a grand event.
This service costs its coveted subscribers $4.99 per month, and it allows them
to share music with friends and swap selected song recommendations.
There were a few shortcomings too in this music service
provided by BlackBerry. One of its serious limitations is each subscriber could
only share maximum 50 songs from a catalogue of millions of sound tracks for
their own selected personal customized playlist.
BlackBerry is offering a 30 day free trial to the
existing BlackBerry Messenger Music Subscribers to competing service
Rdio, which provides unlimited, on-demand access to more than
18 million songs, including the latest hits and classic albums. In the email BlackBerry clearly stated that existing
loyal coveted users won’t be billed for May and as an extra bonus they will also
receive a free one-month subscription
to Rdio for the inconvenience.
It has to be mentioned here that the discontinuation of BBM Music won’t
affect the BB10 users, because
BlackBerry didn’t make it available to the new platform. Now the only concern
is whether or not Spotify (the maker of Rdio) release an app
for Rdio, which it doesn’t have it, for the new BlackBerry OS.
BlackBerry doesn’t provide any clear reason of this BBM Music shutting
down procedure, so it’s still unclear. However the market has become immensely
competitive after the inclusions of Rdio, Pandora, and other popular streaming music
services, that may be the reason.
BlackBerry has also recommended that the subscribers should delete the BBM Music app from their handsets after
the service is stopped.
