According to the Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, tea would be announced as the National Drink by April next year.
The drink would be
accorded National Drink status by April 17 next year to coincide with the 212th
birth anniversary of first Assamese tea planter and Sepoy Mutinity leader
Maniram Dewan.
It was Maniram
Dewan who was not only the first indigenous tea planter but also involved in
the national movement of India. He was a great patriot and freedom fighter.
The other
important reason is that half of the tea industry labor comprises women and is
the largest employer in the organized sector.
Indian government exports a lot of teas to
the foreign market. Tea has an awesome market globally. It also boosts Indian
economy. So Tea deserves to be the National Drink of India. There is no doubt
in it.
