Are cricketers’ good role-models for our children?

In a country obsessed with cricket and movies, cricketers and Bollywood actors become the first and most admired role-models for our children.
In a country obsessed with cricket and movies, cricketers and Bollywood actors become the first and most admired role-models for our children. So you will find most young girls wanting to become Deepika and Katrina and young boys who want to emulate Dhoni and Tendulkar.

We as parents also want to encourage our kids to do what they are interested in and are happy when our children show interest in sports. Then comes a shocker like the recent one of match fixing involving many cricketers and film and TV personalities and we start questioning our wisdom whether it is good idea to allow kids to follow tournaments like IPL.

LED Light Can Damage Your Eyes Permanently

A new research has demanded that LED light may cause everlasting damage to your eyes.
A new research has demanded that LED light may cause everlasting damage to your eyes. The research claimed that the exposure of LED light can cause permanent harm to the retina of human eyes.

Once the retina cells are destroy by prolonged and continuous exposure to LED rays, they cannot be replaced and will not re-grow, ThinkSpain.com explained. So, it’s a very worried situation because computer, mobiles and TV screens, and even traffic and street lights, have been gradually replaced with LED.

What is LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting.

blue LEDs and cool-white LEDs are now capable of exceeding safe limits of the so-called blue-light hazard as defined in eye safety specifications such as ANSI/IESNA RP-27.1–05: Recommended Practice for Photo biological Safety for Lamp and Lamp Systems.

Herschel Telescope Captured Rare Birth Images of Mega-Galaxy

European Space Agency's Herschel telescope captured rare images of the creation of a massive galaxy which is 10 times bigger than the Milky Way

European Space Agency's Herschel telescope captured rare images of the creation of a massive galaxy which is 10 times bigger than the Milky Way that was formed when two young galaxies collided 11 billion years ago in a research.

What is Herschel telescope?

The William Herschel Telescope is a 4.20 m (165 in) near-infrared reflecting telescope which is situated at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in the canary islands on the island of La Palma. The telescope is a part of the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes which is named after William Herschel. Frederick William Herschel was a British astronomer, and he was born in Hanover, Germany. Astronomers use the William Herschel Telescope to conduct scientific research across most branches of observational astronomy. The WHT has made many discover such as, the first evidence of a super massive black hole (Sgr A*) at the centre of the Milky Way (in 1995) and the first optical observation of a gamma-ray burst (GRB 970228) (in 1997).

"Capturing the creation of this type of large, short-lived star body is extremely rare - the equivalent of discovering a missing link between winged dinosaurs and early birds," scientists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) who discovered this told it in a statement.

The researcher, Julie Wardlow, "noticed an amazing, bright blob" that stood out among the "carpets of galaxies" that Herschel recorded.

Will India Emerge as the Best Medical Tourism Destination in the Near Future?

You might wonder what tourism has to do with medicine. Well, when people travels abroad primarily to get medical treatments or even learn/practice preventive healthcare methods, it is called as medical tourism

You might wonder what tourism has to do with medicine. Well, when people travels abroad primarily to get medical treatments or even learn/practice preventive healthcare methods, it is called as medical tourism/well-being tourism. And yes, if people are fit enough (perhaps after the treatment), they can also visit the tourist places/landmarks in their host country!

What drives medical tourism?

Lower cost of treatments, is one of the biggest drivers of medical/well-being tourism, especially to developing countries like India. At times, the cost of certain complex surgeries can be one-tenth of what people might have to pay in their home countries, or even lesser. Include the lower cost of post-treatment stays at top hospitals or 5-Star hotels/resorts around the city, and tourists get a great deal! The travelling cost is the only overhead, but when compared to the total cost of surgeries at home, the savings might still be significant. Besides, connectivity is improving by the day and flight costs are coming down, as well.

(Highest maternal deaths and highest first day infant deaths in the world: Source State of the world’s Mothers’ report 2013)

On the onset of Mother’s day where the whole world is gearing up to celebrate the magical journey of childbirth, I want to highlight condition of Indian women, their pregnancies and newborns. India has recorded more than 29% of the first day infant deaths around the world and it has more maternal deaths than any other country in the world (56,000 per year).

This raises a lot of questions. India has recorded a momentous growth in last few decades and the general outlook of India is female oriented...We call our country “Bharat Mata” (India –the Goddess). Centuries have changed, rulerships have changed hands, geography has changed, physics has changed...we are now one of the biggest democracy of the world where all Indian have equal right irrespective of gender, caste, creed and social status.

Did Sarabjit Singh deserve to die like this?

Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was allegedly a RAW agent, died in the jail of Pakistan due to some brutal attack by some inmates.
Sarabjit Singh

Since last few days, every news channel has run special shows on Sarabjit Singh, an Indian farmer who is supposed to be a RAW agent. To be honest, I didn’t know anything about Singh until April 2013, when he was attacked in the jail. As soon as I heard about Singh on the news, my curiosity was stirred awake. I wanted to know how come an Indian farmer, who was also allegedly a RAW agent, was in Pakistan for such a long time without India taking any action. So I started researching Singh. I went through numerous articles by various publications, including The Times of India and Hindustan Times. Even Wikipedia has got a page on Singh.

But the more I read, the more confused I got. The mystery of Singh was getting more and more convoluted. According to Wikipedia, Singh was an Indian farmer who crossed the unmarked Indo-Pakistan border when he was drunk. Singh was initially arrested for illegally crossing the border. Later on, Pakistani authorities accused Singh of being involved in the 1990 terror blasts at Faisalabad and Lahore that killed 14 people. Now there are two interesting aspects of these charges: first, the blasts were carried out three months before Singh actually strayed into Pakistan; secondly, Pakistani authorities claimed that Sarabjit Singh was actually Manjit Singh. If these facts are true, I have one question. Are Pakistanis really that stupid or they intentionally played dumb to make Singh the target for their problems?

Latest News about Gold in Indian Market

Get latest news on gold in Indian market, as the government increased import tariff value on it, and India Post announces special discount on gold coins.

Indian Government has increased Import Tariff Value on Gold

The Union Government of India finally decided to increase the import tariff value of gold to $472/10 grams on account of a volatile price trend in global markets.
The tariff value, which is released fortnightly, is the coarse price on which the customs duty is decisive to avoid under-invoicing. It was usually 10 days behind that tariff value of gold was altered bringing it down to $449 per 10 grams due to diseased tellurian prices.

However, an import tariff value of china has been kept unvaried during $762 per kg.

The news was confirmed by the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).

Definition of 'Tariff'

A tax imposed on imported goods and services. Tariffs are used to restrict trade, as they increase the price of imported goods and services, making them more expensive to consumers. They are one of several tools available to shape trade policy.
